Another Omani blogger arrested & imprisoned as a reminder there is no free speech in Oman. Plus 123 Orion gig pics!

Postscript correction: It is reported that the blogger was not arrested, at least not for blogging, but may have been taken to Oman's Psychiatric Hospital instead for evaluation.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Oman continues its increasingly common habit of imprisoning journalists and bloggers. The latest victim is blogger Muawiya Al Rawahi, as reported last week by Global Voices On-line and also by the lovely Dhofari Gucci. He was interviewed earlier by Global Voices here.

Photo: Imprisoned Omani blogger Muawiya Alrawahi. Photo by Jillian C York (taken from Global Voices)

Al Rawahi's #1 crime was criticising His Majesty, and HM's response to the protests last year, in a recent post (now removed from his site, but available from the Google cache spiders here).

Now, Muawiya has always been pretty out-there, with often somewhat rambling posts (unfortunately for us English speakers mainly in Arabic) about his unhappiness, work problems, religious doubts, sex, corruption, wasta, alcohol, & the Omani Government. But his forthright writing about his thoughts and ideas are a breath of fresh air in Oman, a land where maintaining 'face' and civility are of prime import. Muawiya was never afraid to tell it how he saw it. And he wrote what looks to me (via google translate!) like some half-decent Arabic poetry. Lately he started to refer to himself as 'Sid' Rawahi.

He's posted critical comments before, but as we all know here in The Sultanate of Oman, explicit speech against Oman's system of Government and especially anything critical of His Majesty, are totally verboten. Especially following the protests last year.

Hence his arrest and imprisonment. He has not yet faced trial as far as I know, but in Oman there is no habeas corpus. And his post could obviously be considered potentially illegal under Omani Law (as is almost any critical posting that mentions the Government or HM, the law is so broad and draconian), so his detention would be found OK under Habeas Corpus even if Oman had such a legal principal.

The confirmation by the Omani Court of Appeal of the 5 month prison terms given to the journalists convicted of insulting the Justice Minister doesn't make it look good for someone convicted of similar offenses against HM Sultan Qaboos...

It's a pity US journalist Judith Miller, who was granted an unusual 4 hr interview with HM last month (you can read her post about it here), didn't seem to ask him about such practices. Afterall, it's no secret that Oman is not a democracy, but an autocratic Absolute Monarchy.

Instead she focused on the on-going situation with Iran and Syria. HM supposedly said he didn't think Iran was pursuing a nuke, which is something that's difficult to believe he actually thinks, but with tensions high HM is wisely trying his best to calm things down. More on that later.

This blog is a big believer in free speech. In fact, I think it's more important in a true democratic sense than the right to vote. And as Muawiya is quoted as saying:
"the issue we don’t discuss is the issue we won’t solve"

Here here. So best wishes to you Sid. I trust you are at least being well treated by the boys in ISS and that you'll be released soon. I'm hoping you'll just be given a good talking to and released with a warning.

The gig at Royal Flight by local rockers 123 Orion was a great success. The event was a sell-out and a good time was had by all, abbeted by the cheap drinks at Royal Flight. And they raised a tremendous RO.705 [~US$1800] for their charity cause - this year the Sindbad mobile library.

Well done to all involved, including new support band Iznogoud, who I presume have a French connection.

Their annual Winter Warmer Bash would be well worth supporting on the strength of 'any excuse for a good party', but to also raise so much money for a good cause makes it extra terrific (& thanks for the pics Jon G!)

US moving troops into Oman? Israel keeps threatening to attack Iranian Nuclear sites.
Why would HM give a rare interview right now, his first big chat to an American reporter since 1997?

Iran.

There are reports by right-wing Israeli news site DEBKA of significant US Troop movements into Masirah Island over the past few weeks, along with defensive military preparations in Eastern Saudi.

...Tehran too is gearing up for conflict: The Iranian Guards Ground Forces chief Brig. Gen. Mohammad Pakpour Saturday, Feb. 4 announced the start of a three-week exercise in southern Iran and the Strait of Hormuz under conditions of war. debkafile: The "exercise" is in fact an Iranian military buildup ahead of a possible American or Israel attack.

debkafile's military sources report a steady flow of many thousands of US troops for some weeks to two strategic islands within reach of Iran, Oman's Masirah just south of the Strait of Hormuz and Socotra, between Yemen and the Horn of Africa. (DEBKA-Net-Weekly 526 of Jan. 27 was the first world publication to reveal the massive concentration of American might on the two islands.)

This concentration was held by the White House as sufficiently urgent to relent on its refusal to admit the ousted Yemeni leader Ali Abdullah Salah to America for medical treatment. He won permission in exchange for his consent to the Socotra military buildup.

...

Our military sources report that the Saudis this week wound up their own intensive preparations for war. Large forces are now deployed around Saudi oil fields, pipelines and export facilities in the eastern provinces opposite the Persian Gulf, backed by anti-missile Patriot PAC-3 batteries. American, British and French fighter-bombers have been landing at Saudi air bases to safeguard the capital, Riyadh.
...”

So it seems HM's interview was aimed at helping to cool down the rhetoric on Iran. HM admitted he passed onto the Iranians US warnings of a robust response to any attempt to close the Straits of Hormuz.

... He disclosed that Oman, at America's "hint" for assistance, had recently conveyed to the highest levels of the Iranian government a warning about the adverse potential consequences of closing the Strait of Hormuz. How precisely that message was conveyed -- "we have our ways and means," he said -- he would not disclose. But he added that he believes the message was clearly received.

"No one will block the Strait of Hormuz," Qaboos asserted.
...

Well, certainly not for very long, not with 3 US aircraft carrier groups around.

With some of the largest reserves of natural gas in the world, if electricity is what the Iranians want, good old gas turbine-driven power stations would be the cheapest and fastest way to get electrical power. Nuclear is expensive, slow, antagonistic and dangerous, and doesn't make any sense if all you really want is electricity. Everything points to a secret nuke programme.

Fingers crossed there will be a peaceful resolution to this, but in my opinion Iran seems determined to not back down. And if there's military action, remember Oman's US bases will be a target for Iranian retaliation.

Lastly - An Appeal for assistance.
I'm trying to finish the long overdue Blue City Part 3, I really am, but I need some pics of what it looks like at Al Sawadi these days. So, any readers who happen to be passing the Blue City site, please take a few moments to drive by and email a few photos to me? Please state approximate date taken and what the picture is showing. And let me know if you want photo credit or not!

123Orion May charity gig huge success (as usual!). Government patience snaps in Dhofar, everybody arrested

As the powers that be open up a giant can of military-backed wuppass on the peaceful demonstrators in Salalah, using a huge force of army troops + ROP & ISS + teargas, and switching off south Oman's entire mobile phone network and internet for 2 hours while doing so, it's good to know good folks have been keeping it real in Muscat.

123Orion's sell out charity gig in Muscat on May 5th raised 360 rials [US$900] for the Japanese Earthquake victims.

Photo" 123Orion rock the house for earthquake victims.

Well done JON G. Wish I could have been there.

Meanwhile in Salalah, things are going to get worse I suspect. Hopefully no-where near neighbouring Yemeni levels, but Dhofaris are not the sort to take being forced to shut up lying down. Keep checking Dhofari Gucci for latest news folks.

Sitting around in a roundabout calling for investigations into Ministerial corruption is, of course, extremely illegal in Oman.

Someone's patience has clearly expired.

PS
As posted in a comment on Muscat Mutterings, the Oman News Agency explained the situation quite clearly, here repeated in the Oman Observer (The Government owned newspaper):

Provocateurs held
Fri, 13 May 2011
MUSCAT — An official security source said security and military authorities yesterday arrested a number of provocateurs in Muscat Governorate and Wilayat of Salalah.
The source said deliberate inciting of rioting and public disorder by the detainees has reached a level that necessitated intervention to prevent them from continuing to break the law and stop their attempts to incite sedition, which has nothing to do with the public interest.

The source said security authorities commends citizens and those who co-operated for they know the real intentions of those persons who committed the unacceptable and who have no justification to continue gatherings and sit-ins. The authorities affirmed they will not hesitate to apply the law and protect the security of citizens and the nation.

Quite right. Sit-ins are very provocative.

Muscat Confidential plugged by Times of Oman, and an update on 123Orion's charity gig

Sorry folks, I've been a very busy Dragon of late, jetting around a lot and focused on earning treasure for my new employer.

So it was very nice to see Muscat Confidential mentioned in a recent Times of Oman article on Omani blogging by my favorite Omani journo, Saleh Al Shaibany (thanks for the tips S & MM).

...
However, among websites that has really caught up the interests of many surfers is muscatconfidential.blogspot.com.
The web is hosted by an individual who said on his website that he once was an expatriate working as a government consultant. The site posts controversial topics alleged to have happened in the country.
“The muscatconfidential site posts news that cannot be confirmed and it has a wide following by expatriates. However, Omanis do write to this site to express their own views,” Al Rawahi said.
...

The article nicely skirts the issue on the use of VPNs in Oman. Until a few months ago yes, there was a lot of VPN (virtual private network) use in Oman, for all the reasons Saleh mentioned (VOIP, access to USA sites that demand a USA IP location, relatively anonymous internet usage), and the ones he didn't mention (tunneling through Omantel's porn sensitive websites filter). But since then, Omantel and Nawras have upgraded the filter (thanks Siemens IT geeks!!) and blocked all VPNs as far as I could tell. If anyone has a working one, email the details?

The recent events in Egypt and Tunisia (and Iran earlier) also highlight the huge problem this new world of the internet poses for the autocratic regime. When you're used to censoring the news and public communications, restricting the power of association, issuing licenses for anything to do with civil society, listening into all telephone calls (and don't forget locking up your unmarried daughters away from potential suitors), how the hell do you control the 'net, smart phones, twitter, facebook, blogs, forums, encrypted skype and blackberrys, all powered by an instantaneous global news cycle fueled by camera phones and a gazillion citizen reporters? Hosni Mubarak is trying to figure that out right now...

I'm not convinced restricting the use of VPN in Oman is addressing the root of the problem.

The recent 123Orion charity gig raised over 500 rials [US$1250] for Dar Al Atta's "Let's Read" program. Great job Jon G & the team! Lucky reader Scarlet Pimpernel scored 2 free tickets and reported a great time was had by all.

Be Quick - Free tickets to 123Orion's Charity bash for Dar Al Atta'a Let's Read! Campaign

Muscat Confidential is pleased to offer 2 free tickets to a lucky reader to attend 123Orion's Charity bash on 20th January at the Royal Flight [directly opposite the airport]!

Usual rules apply: post a comment (with a way to contact you), or send me an email, before 7pm on the 19th of Jan, and you'll be in to win!

You get 2 entry tickets, those 4 free drinks, food, and get your groove on to 3 bands - free.

And I can tell you the charitable contribution is going towards the Dar Al Atta'a Let's Read! Campaign.

The Dar Al Atta'a Let's Read! Campaign, formed in February 2007, aims to promote reading as a fun and enjoyable activity. We focus on encouraging children to read. We believe that reading is a key, not only to qualifications and a successful career, but also to knowledge and understanding of ourselves, of others and of the world in which we live. Reading promotes empathy and tolerance towards others by broadening our horizons. Curling up with a good book also gives us a great opportunity to relax and take time out from our stressful lives.

Our Let's Read! Campaign achieves its aims in a variety of ways. We initiate book drives, readathons and writing competitions in schools and we find volunteers to read stories to children.
We hold monthly used book sales so that adults and children can buy good books at reasonable prices and we hold regular events such as Let's Read! 'Big Book' Days full of fun, hands on, literacy activities and story telling sessions by local and international authors.

With the money we raise from our book sales and events, we buy books in the Arabic language for our projects. These include creating libraries in schools and playrooms and reading areas in hospitals.

Our latest project is to improve libraries for a small schools and nurseries outside the capital area. With your help, the Let's Read! campaign can raise the funds necessary to equip the libraries with books, shelving, furniture, computers and white boards.

Excellent.

Great party on 20th Jan - 123Orion & friends gig at Royal Flight

A great way to kick off the New Year folks. Local band 123Orion are doing another of their charity gigs at the Royal Flight on 20th January - the "Winter Warmer", with cracking home-made soup & sandwiches.

You get an entry ticket prize and 4 (yes, 4) free drinks (with or without alcohol as required), food, and 3 bands - all for the sum of 7 Riyals per ticket. The ticket also includes the charitable contribution as usual. The band tells me the Charity is yet to be clarified, but it's to do with running pre-school care in the villages of Oman, so a good cause.

Their last charity gig in April last year was great. I attended and had a blast. Must admit, 123Orion remind me somewhat of famous trippy band Jefferson Airplane:

Enjoy!

In other news: New ROP Plane crash lands at Muscat Airport
Anyone got any phone-cam footage of the crash landing a few days ago at Muscat Airport of the brand new ROP Embraer plane? I'm told HE Macki and the head of the ROP were on board for the VIP first flight. No reports of any serious injuries, but the undercarriage collapsed on landing apparently.

It forced the closure of the airport for a couple of hours while the badly damaged plane was removed from the runway.

UPDATE:

Here's the pic of the new ROP plane on the runway. A bit of an Oh-no moment...

I wonder who the pilot was?

Updates: 123Orion charity, Muscat Rugby club fundraiser and last chance for free tickets to Hi FM Comedy night!

A few weeks ago, local Expat band 123 Orion did a gig at the Royal Flight to raise funds for local good cause previously featured on the blog, the Creative Learning Centre. The gig was a sell-out and a great success, raising 400 rials [over US$1000] and providing great fun and entertainment for the folks. Well done 123 Orion and special thanks to Jon G.

Photo: Members of band 123 Orion presenting their cheque for 400 rials to the Manager of the Creative Learning Center. Great Job!

Meanwhile, the 'A ruckin' good time' comedy show at Muscat Rugby Club on May 13th was also a hit, and raised loads of cash (over 900 rials!) for the local rugby team. Well done to Mr. & Mrs. Sythe who organised the event. Mr Sythe is a local blogger and author of Muscat Mutterings. Muscat Confidential reader Delirious in the Desert won 2 free tickets to the event and sent this review:

Local comedy show fundraiser big hit at Muscat Rugby Club
All in all it was a great event and fun was had by all - it was well coordinated and sounds like the Rugby boys will get almost a full strip for next season :)
My hubby and I missed the first 3 comedians (we had friends who arrived in town that night from Abu Dhabi and their plane was delayed, so our dinner plans were pushed back).

We did hear that 2 of the first 3 people were awesome, but Mr Sythe would be better versed to speak on their performances...

However, the first comedian after the break was FANTASTIC - an Omani/British guy from Qantab who rocked the house with his jokes about his flight attendant days, as well as growing up in a fishing village /multi-cultural household / and the challenges of explaining traditions like Christmas & The Tooth Fairy to his Omani friends. He had the audience in hysterics and was sent off stage with a round of applause!

The next guy was a Kenyan with a strong American accent, and bless him - he struggled through his performance due to a lack of audience reaction, but nevertheless he finished his set and held his head high. All credit to him though, he approached people after the show and requested feedback - although I wasn't game enough to be honest with him since I immediately thought of the old Jack Nicholson quote "You can't handle the truth" from that Tom Cruise movie!

The final comedian was hilarious and had a huge presence on stage, quite literally. He was an big Omani guy dressed in a rusty coloured dishdasha and matching kumar, joking about sports, sex and cars...quite the line-up. He was a real character and had everyone laughing and cringing at the same time!!!

Overall it was a good night had by all, judging from my sore cheeks and head the next day. Our friends from Abu Dhabi had a good time too and commented that it was the best amateur comedy night they had been too in ages.

Cheers for the tickets!!!
DITD.

More free stuff! HiFM Comedy
There's more comedy on its way, and you still can enter the draw for one of 2 pairs of free tickets to comedian Amer Zahr, playing on Wednesday, 2nd June at the Crown Plaza.

Either place a comment on this post (with a means of contact and remember it's public) or email undercover(dot)dragon(at)gmail(dot)com, and you are in to win. The draw will be held at midnight, Wednesday 26th May. Enter now!!!

You can also buy tickets by calling the HiFM booking line on (+968) 955-55699

Amer, already a feature on ABC network's "Politically Incorrect" show, is so funny he's just been given his own sitcom vehicle on US TV this season. So for 15 rials a ticket it's a bargain.

And lastly,
Omani Legal Eagle BlueChi, currently on a work experience programme in the US Congress, had the bad luck to get assigned to Congressman Mark Souder for the Legislative Fellowship Program he's on.

Mr Souder, a right-wing 'Family values' Christian Republican, was forced to resign last week after admitting to an inappropriate relationship with a staff member!! See BlueChi's blog here. I'm told BlueChi was live tweeting the event as it happened.

The most unusual thing about the event that it was a female member of his staff... Blue Chi is definitely getting a real tour of US politics!

123 Orion gig raises 400 rials for Creative Learning Center! Plus details of another event promoting Cancer awareness at the Al Bustan, May 6th

One of the features of 'the Expat life' is how people get together to entertain themselves more often than they would back in the real world. There's more of a community than in your average big city.

I'm happy to report the sell-out gig on Thursday night by band 123 Orion raised 400 rials (~US$1000) for local good cause the Creative Learning Center.

And I'm told by a several reliable sources that the evening was a big hit with everyone: the fish and chips (with paper wrapping) was excellent, as was the band, the vibe, and the venue. Muscat Daily even sent a photographer (perhaps all is forgiven? I'm sure Mohanna will add a generous contribution to the final tally to the charity in return for the free column inches...)

Next time Erich, you may need to think about a bigger venue! Or at least more often than once a year.

Well done to the members of 123 Orion and their friends and fans. Some kids who need help will be better off as a direct result of your generosity.

123 Orion Mayday gig for charity

Muscat-based band, 123 Orion, celebrated May Day by playing a gig to raise funds for a local charity at the Royal Flight on Thursday 29 April. This is the third year that the rock group, under the stage names Blind Boy McBracken (David MacDonald); Erich Sarbolis (Jon Goodliffe); Hawk Timimi (Omar Khammas), Muffin Burt (Jenni Eden); Steed Scotia (Stephen Monteith); Titus Chump (Max Goodliffe); Vanya Helsingborg (Tess Goodliffe) and Ziggy Gibson (Liz MacDonald) have played their unique mix of original songs and cover versions to an enthusiastic public. The band have been together, with a varying line up, since 2004 and have played in a number of different venues as well as outside gigs in the desert and on the beach in Tiwi.

“Our original songs have been inspired by living in Oman; themes of the sea and seafaring folk travelling to Zanzibar as well as the events of our own personal lives such as in the song ‘Garden of Eden’” explained Vanya, one of the lead singers.

This year’s event was raising funds for the charity Creative Learning Center who offer creative learning activities for disabled children in Oman. A raffle held at the gig included an opportunity to win works by local artist Jenni Eden and photographer Mairi Thomas as well as exciting kitchen appliances such as a lean grill and a free descaling at Hawk’s dental surgery!

“Although we all have our daytime activities whether as teachers, technicians or dentists, we love the opportunity to play music – even better when we have a chance to raise money for charity and excite our audiences” added Vanya.

123 Orion are currently working on an album of original songs, ‘Into Orbit', which they plan to release at the end of 2010.

Don't forget to register for the free tickets to the comedy gig at Muscat Rugby Club. Just comment on the post or (even better) send me an email. The draw is tomorrow!

And finally, there is another charity gig picked up by the organisers of my facebook fan page: the Omanternity SpringFest 2010! The association aims to increase awareness about cancerous diseases in the Sultanate of Oman.
