Be Quick - Free tickets to 123Orion's Charity bash for Dar Al Atta'a Let's Read! Campaign

Muscat Confidential is pleased to offer 2 free tickets to a lucky reader to attend 123Orion's Charity bash on 20th January at the Royal Flight [directly opposite the airport]!

Usual rules apply: post a comment (with a way to contact you), or send me an email, before 7pm on the 19th of Jan, and you'll be in to win!

You get 2 entry tickets, those 4 free drinks, food, and get your groove on to 3 bands - free.

And I can tell you the charitable contribution is going towards the Dar Al Atta'a Let's Read! Campaign.

The Dar Al Atta'a Let's Read! Campaign, formed in February 2007, aims to promote reading as a fun and enjoyable activity. We focus on encouraging children to read. We believe that reading is a key, not only to qualifications and a successful career, but also to knowledge and understanding of ourselves, of others and of the world in which we live. Reading promotes empathy and tolerance towards others by broadening our horizons. Curling up with a good book also gives us a great opportunity to relax and take time out from our stressful lives.

Our Let's Read! Campaign achieves its aims in a variety of ways. We initiate book drives, readathons and writing competitions in schools and we find volunteers to read stories to children.
We hold monthly used book sales so that adults and children can buy good books at reasonable prices and we hold regular events such as Let's Read! 'Big Book' Days full of fun, hands on, literacy activities and story telling sessions by local and international authors.

With the money we raise from our book sales and events, we buy books in the Arabic language for our projects. These include creating libraries in schools and playrooms and reading areas in hospitals.

Our latest project is to improve libraries for a small schools and nurseries outside the capital area. With your help, the Let's Read! campaign can raise the funds necessary to equip the libraries with books, shelving, furniture, computers and white boards.

Massive Cross dressing themed party planned for Muscat!!

Sometimes it's spooky how things coincide.

Yes, earlier readers will be relieved (I'm sure) to learn that Boxster doesn't have to do his drag-streak in City Centre to test the Sultanate's approach to the issue of cross-dressing ...

The legal status of a bit of face paint and a frock on a bloke will instead be tested handsomely at this year's annual (and famously awesome) ANZO Ball.

Theme for this year: Priscilla Queen of the Desert. A famous and quite excellent Aussie movie about 3 drag queens on a road trip in Australia (since remade in the USA, and a world-wide musical too).

Fantastic.

I must attend this soire!!!!!!!! Oh yes. (I'll try and get tickets for you too Mr. T, if you and the misses want to have a very safe walk on wild side...)

I must say, keep the party low profile, it will be one heck of a party, and we don't want it spoiled by party poopers.

I actually hope this will truly demonstrate Oman's more sensible approach to such matters: if it's a private party, with no-one being silly, hey, why not? Its just those crazy Brits and their Colonial brethren: everyone knows how they like to dress up as girls.

The Rocky Horror Show. Wonderful. I'll be using it as inspiration for my outfit.

And lets face it, they are mostly here in jobs working hard to support the country, and it IS their culture.

So see you there. Tickets will be hard to get, so befriend an Aussie or a kiwi today!

Oh, and all the uptight readers should first treat themselves to actually watching the movie Priscilla Queen of the Desert before harping on and getting all worked up about something harmless and huge fun.

Party and Fireworks: Make friends with PDO people

It's good to have friends who work for PDO, the local national Oil Company. Any expats new to Oman are highly recommended to befriend PDO people, because they can invite you to.... their Club. Situated on perhaps the best beach in all Oman.

Thanks to such friends I wangled an invite. Went there Wednesday night to see 2 tribute bands playing - of the Eagles and U2. Dinner and a drink included all for 15 rials pp [~$40]. After a few bottles of South African bubbles, and at just 5 rials a bottle can you blame my indulgence?, they sounded as good as the real thing. A blast was had by the roughly 800 people there.

Possibly the safest rock concert I've ever been to. Loads of kids, and a great mix of Expats and Omanis, all getting stuck in to the bar and shakin their rumps as only middle aged white folks can.

Excellent. And a great way to celebrate Obama's victory too. I watched his speech, and was struck by how impressive this man is.

Next night, it seemed all of Muscat was there to watch a great display of free fireworks. Masses of Omani teens, all scoping out the opposite sex and flirting. Very Cute. And a really great show. Thanks PDO! (and friends)
